Mens’ SkinCare Comes of Age
Long gone are the days of seeing constant Gillette razor adverts of a handsome man, clearing away shaving foam with one swoop of a super sharp razor are numbered. It’s not unusual now to see anti-ageing products being advertised specifically aimed at men. It’s official - men are more skincare savvy.
For eons, women have cared for their skin and men haven’t. But there’s all reason for men to use mens’ skincare and organic mens’ skincare because it’s a fact that men have approximately 15 percent oilier skin and significantly larger pores than women do. Men should have a good deep cleansing routine preferably using good organic skincare products is very important because dirt can get trapped in larger pores.
The 80s era saw mens’ skincare limited to simple shaving foam and aftershave. Cleansers, toners, moisturisers, shaving gels and lotions now sit on the shelves traditionally reserved for skincare ranges targeted at women. Now L’oreal, Lancome and Clarins have smart mens’ skincare ranges so we are certainly set to see the next best move in male grooming.
Sales of mens’ skincare products have increased by 25%, something unheard of in the eighties. Mens’ skin care products are becoming very favourite in Western Europe; the UK, Germany, Italy and France. In Australia, men are cottoning onto the fact that with the increase of skin cancer, it’s a small price to pay.
So are men more image conscious? Lifestyle magazines like FHM, Men’s Health and Nuts have raised the importance of being body conscious, style conscious and image conscious propelled by iconic figures such as the footballer David Beckham and A-listers like Brad Pitt, who uses organic skin care range Dr Haushcka. Men have traditionally been more cautious towards mens’ skin care and organic skin care but now there is a different thinking around skincare.
In particular, young men take care of their image and their health. Mens’ organic skincare is following hot on the heels of women’s organic skin care with a strong tendency towards natural cleansers and moisturisers. Organic skin care ranges like Spiezia, Green People and Weleda are meeting the demands of men who are more concerned about their skin. It’s hardly surprising that organic skin care is making a mark on the male consciousness.
Furthermore, there are many women who still buy products for men during their weekly shop. However, with the increase in single mortal households, women shopping for men’s organic skin care products and skin care products generally are falling. Previously, men may have used their partner’s products. With the plethora of mens’ skincare products available, men are now asserting their freedom of choice.
