Five Common Causes of Snoring

by Rudy Watkins

In order to stop snoring, it is important to refer the source of the problem. Snoring is brought on by various factors.

The five common causes of snoring are:

Drinking Alcohol

To find out whether your snoring problem is alcohol induced, have someone investigate whether or not you snore on a night that you haven’t had anything to drink.

Alcohol is a depressant and can contribute to snoring because it relaxes the muscles in your neck and throat. This relaxation is more advanced than with regular sleep and this can cause your airways to become restricted.

If, after checking, you find that your snoring is a result of your alcohol intake, simply stop drinking. Not drinking alcohol within the four hours before you go to sleep is another viable option.

Sleeping on Your Back

A large number of people with snoring problems do not snore if they do not sleep on their back. Therefore, learning to sleep on your side can eliminate your snoring.

There are plenty of devices that help with this, but they’re mostly variations of a home-grown remedy.

One way to teach yourself to sleep differently is by pinning a tennis ball inside a sock to the backside of your pajamas. This way, you will automatically move back onto your side when sleeping to refrain the discomfort caused by the tennis ball.

Are You Overweight?

Being overweight is another potential cause of snoring. Breathing can be restricted and snoring brought about by fatty tissues in both the throat and neck. The solution: lose some of that excess wait.

Do You Use Antihistamines or Sleeping Pills?

Both of these medications are depressants and affect the body in a way similar to alcohol. Snoring problems can be caused by the induced above average relaxation of muscles in your throat.

Do You Suffer from Allergies?

Nasal congestion that occurs because of allergies can prevent your body from taking in the proper amount of oxygen.

Treating allergies with a decongestant is the best idea, since taking an antihistamine will tend to result in snoring anyway.

These are some of the more common causes of snoring, but you should talk to a health care professional to get an informed opinion of what’s causing your snoring and the best solution for it.
