Getting a root canal is usually the end of a bad joke. But now you can exchange those horrible memories of visiting the dentist for something a little more soothing.
Just imagine the sound of the drill muted by a babbling brook, and the smell of rubber gloves replaced by the aroma of lavender. You will not feel the pokes and prods of harsh tools because you will be too absent-minded with a deep tissue massage. Sound pleasing?
Complementary treatments have grown into mainstays in dental offices around the world. Now that Dr. Shilpa Trivedi can see that there are people attached to the teeth they treat, we all have a reason to smile. Offices that employ the so-called “spa dentistry” methods report that patients leave cavity-free and relaxed to the core. Not only that, todays dentists accept many more referrals from clientele.
What could you expect from an experience in spa dentistry? The term serves as an umbrella to a bevy of practices-aromatherapy and massages are among the most common-coupled with traditional dental procedures. All practices employing spa dentistry focus on helping the patient leave their fears and tension at the door.
A typical appointment at Preferred Dental Care, in Flushing, NY-the “Four Seasons of Dentistry”-gives us a taste of what to expect. To distract patients from their surroundings there are “landscape glasses” which covers the patients eyes portraying a more desirable locale, like a peaceful stream in the woods. Headphones are also given to you so you can play music of your choice, remote-controlled massage mats that knead your back, and aromatherapy oils that soothe and calm. At the end of the appointment, every patient is treated to a hot towel, ibuprofen, lip balm and a milkshake-all served on a silver platter.
Needless as some of these amenities may seem, apiece is chosen for a reason. For example, the goal of the milkshake is to soothe mouth soreness and hold up the desire for heavier foods while the effects of the anesthesia disappear.
Aromatherapy scents are carefully chosen to create specific moods. Scents like rose can soothe and calm patients while getting worked on, rosemary stimulates and refreshes those in recovery. Also, several clinical trials have shown acupuncture to be an effectual pain reliever in the dental office. In fact, the spa dentistry trend found its beginnings with acupuncture in the 1970s, and today it is still widely used by dentists to control pain.
Maybe the most commonly used spa dentistry treatment is massage, which is known to release endorphins and lower blood pressure. Normal dental office anxiety can raise blood pressure and encourage the production of adrenaline, decreasing the effectiveness of anesthesia, writes Dr. Shilpa Trivedi. She adds that massage can offset these undesirable effects, in turn requiring less chemical anesthesia for the same numbing effects.
Surprisingly, these supplementary services do not often up the quantity of the bill, as they cost the office little to implement. This makes spa dentistry a viable choose for everyone, especially those who tend to steer clear of necessary teeth cleanings due to phobias. Who knows-maybe a new era of dental care has begun.

Wives and girlfriends everywhere they have lost another ‘womens only’ getaway from there men. Gone are the days when women could head down to the spa on there own for a bit of peace and quite because unfortunately for them there husbands and boyfriends will probably be joining them. According to a recent spa survey men now make up almost a third of spa goers and that figure is rising quickly. Men are not just heading to the spa for a traditionally manly sports massage they are also trying out manicures, facials, mud packs and body scrubs.
Thanks to the creation of the metrosexual man getting a spa treatment has lost much of the stigma it had even 10 years ago. While most men still might not brag in the pub about the body scrub they had at the spa the other day, they don’t mind going along with there wives and girlfriends to get one.
Most men now realise that they need to look after themselves if they want to stay fit and health and looking good. Although most don’t like to admit it many men do care about there appearance. Just like women men see celebrities on TV and in magazines looking good and they want to emulate that. They also see how women look at these men at want some of that sort of attention for themselves. So spa treatments have become another way to achieve this along side the nice clothes, trendy hair cuts and nice cars. They have also become an extension of a health and fitness regime that includes might include gym workouts and running.
Spas have been quick to notice this trend and are now catering to there new cliental. Most spas now have a men’s treatment menu that has specifically been designed to cater to the needs and wants that men have. They have also given many of the treatments less flowery obloquy than the female versions so as not to embarrass anyone who still may feel a bit sheepish about heading to a spa. So favourite have spas become for men that male only spas are spring up crossways the country and are increasing in popularity rapidly.

The winter months are drawing near and your hair is absent is that summer lustre, frankly - it looks a mess. Whilst in summer you can get away with the flyaway, surf-style hair, in winter its a different matter. Our hair tends to have a bit of a meltdown over winter, suffering from the typical problems of dryness just as our skin and lips go all cracked and dry, so too do our previously glossy locks.
Then weve got the onslaught of the mega frizz when we get caught in the rain without an umbrella. Or we get caught in the rain with one of those handbag sized umbrellas that do nothing except for blow inside out and you get soaked anyway. Annoying that, isnt it.
To tame those winter locks all you need to do is follow these five simple steps and itll be looking just as good as it did during those summer months. By the way, scrap the bronzer during winter, your hair may be nice and shimmery but your grappling doesnt need tanning anymore!
1. Cut It
We know its only step one and youre already screaming at the prospect of cutting those locks that youve patiently grown, but if you dont have regular trims your hair will keep breaking and youll have a ton of nasty split ends. If you dare to go short this winter, do it drastically! If youre brave enough, the pixie cut is cushy to maintain and is bang on trend.
2. Condition Like Mad
Your hair is dry and static because it is absent moisture. As soon as you step out of a toasty warm house into the harsh cold, your hair really doesnt like it. Get in control of those locks with weekly intensive conditioning treatments then follow with a short, sharp blast of cold water - this will lock in moisture and prevent the dryness when your hair is dry.
3. Dont Wash it Too Much!
Now, we may have just told you to condition intensively but do not be tempted to wash your hair every day - even if it has a tendency to be greasy all year round. If you wash too often, your hair will be stripped of its natural oils, this has different effects on different people but as a general rule of thumb - for those with dry hair, it will get drier and for those with greasy hair it will actually get greasier. In the same way, dont use too many products as they can make the hair look dull. Use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of all that product build-up.
4. Avoid the Heat
Where doable it is important to refrain the straighteners and hair curlers in the winter months. If you do really need to use a heated product, always use a heat protecting treatment. For naturally curly hair, frizz reducing products are a godsend - apply then on your hair when wet or for a more intensive treatment - apply before you go to bed at night.
5. Hats are Hot
The beanie is back and every fashionista should have one in their wardrobe. Hats are a brilliant way to get around bad hair days and you dont even need an excuse to wear one during the winter months! Watch out though - hats can also be the source of the dreaded hat hair. To refrain hat hair make sure you keep your hats clean, by regularly washing or dry cleaning them.

Does your hair demand volume, luster, shine, thickness and radiance? If you answered yes to any one of these questions then you need this recipe. Quite frankly anything you can buy in the beauty supply store that claims to “restore” the hair basically doesn’t work. All the commercial products do is smooth the hair shaft, make it feel softer and detangle. But feeding, nourishing and infusing the vital nutritional factors that the hair needs to thrive no-way, no-day. To get outrageous hair you will need to whip up this miracle worker right in your own kitchen.
This recipe works like magic, it takes a bit of work to gather the ingredients but it is well worth it. We are going to place together a nutrient dense paste that contains all the vital nutrients needed to bring the hair back to life. The hair basically needs a constant supply of proteins, minerals and essential fatty acids to keep strong, elastic and shiny. I prefer to use as many whole, organic and raw ingredients as possible.
Lets get started:
Your will need a medium sized mixing bowl. I prefer ceramic or glass, please no metal. To begin the base of my hair treatment you will need organic, raw sesame paste. Sesame is the king of seeds it is one of the most condensed nutritious foods on the planet. Sesame contains abundant amounts of manganese, copper, calcium, magnesium, iron, b-vitamins and zinc. The form we will be using is tahini, you might recognize this tasty ingredient as the lemony sauce you use to flavor your gyros or falafels. As tasty as tahini can be it will be one of the crucial ingredients to give you the big, fat sexy hair that you crave.
My favorite brand of tahini is prefabricated by Rejuvenative Foods. They are a great company based in Santa Cruz that make the best and I mean the very best nut butters, seed butters and cultured foods on the planet. Everyone of their products is raw, organic and processed with minimal heat to ensure all the lovely nutrients are brimming with vitality. Recipe: (2 treatments) 1/2 Cup Raw Tahini (Rejuvenative Foods)
1 Tablespoon Liquid Aminos (Bragg)
1 Tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar ( Bragg)
1 Tablespoon Bee Pollen (Local Variety)
1 Teaspoon Crystal Manna-Blue Green Algae (Ancient Sun)
1/2 Teaspoon Himalayan Salt (Ancient Sun)
1 Tablespoon Truffle Oil (Your local Gourmet Store)
1 Tablespoon Raw Hazelnut Oil (Your local Gourmet Store)
1 Tablespoon Organic Sulphur (MSM) (Now)
2 Egg Yolks (Local Organic Cage Free)
Combine all ingredients in your glass or ceramic bowl. Mix all ingredients until you achieve a smooth paste like consistency. You have just prefabricated the very best treatment for your hair that money can buy.
Directions: With your head over your sink to prevent making a mess, start massaging the paste into your hair. Massage well until the hair is saturated. Then cover your hair with plastic wrap and place on a shower cap and hang out for at least 20-30 minutes. Watch your favorite soap opera, talk to a friend, meditate or do what ever makes you feel good. Then remove the wrapping and wash out thoroughly in your shower. For best results do not shampoo right after the treatment, it is best to move 24 hours. But if you must that is okay. This recipe is prefabricated for two treatments, it will keep up to 7 days in your refrigerator. If you want the sexiest hair in the city do this treatment twice a week and you will have shinier hair than Charlotte.

Winter Skin
The clocks are going back which is a signal that winter is on its way. Although were fans certain things about winter; the big comfy jumpers that cover a multitude of sins, the whole Christmas thing, the hope of a tiny bit of snow so we can at least chuck one snowball - were not fans of the effect that winter has on our skin.
Winter skin is typically dry, flaky and dull. Not exactly our favourite combination of words. So what to do, we cant effort nature can we? Well actually, we can place up a pretty good fight, particularly because certain things were doing are probably making the problem worse! Follow these simple guidelines and give your skin a head start this winter.
1. Sun Protection
Not the most obvious piece of advice but an essential one. Just because its winter doesnt mean that the suns harmful rays cant get to you. In fact, a big mistake that many people make over the winter months is to ditch the SPF. Use an SPF during winter and your skin will thank you by keeping those telltale wrinkles at bay.
2. Central Heating
Central heating can exacerbate dry skin during winter months. Although the cold climate is responsible for a reduction in humidity, high central heating temperatures are also a contributor to low humidity causing dried out skin. The contrast between high central heating temperatures and the outdoor cold climate makes your skin confused and causes it to dry out even more. Try to turn the heating down and, and if you cant grappling doing that, get some humidity back into the air by placing a bowl of water next to your bed when you go to sleep. Youll notice that a significant amount of water will have evaporated by morning and your skin will thank you too!
3. Makeup
Get it off! Winter is office party season and youll probably be caking it on to look your top notch best. Please, for goodness sake, take it off properly before you go to bed. Not only is the panda eyes look a little last season, but your skin wont like you clogging up its pores. Youre likely to get spots if you do it too - so not a good look.
4. Water
Drink it, simply - 2 litres a day if you can manage it. It hydrates you inside and out and will prevent your skin from looking horrible and dry.
5. Moisturise
Winter means dry skin, you cant totally get around it, and so it goes without saying that you need to moisturise like angry to get the moisture back into your skin. You might think that the worst months for your skin are the coldest i.e. Jan and February, but the worst months are actually when Autumn turns to Winter i.e. October and November. Get ahead of the game by getting your skin moisturised morning and night and your skin will have a better chance of beating winter skin.
