1. TV
Not just the television but any electronic device with a screen. A recent study found that those people who either watched television or read their emails for example find it a lot harder to start asleep.
2. Exercise
Everybody knows that the benefits of exercise are endless, having a better night sleep is included in this long list. According to a CNN report you should exercise in the morning or in the afternoon to see the best benefits whilst you sleep. 8. Long kip & Spoon Technique
Artist and napper Salvador painter had an interesting kip technique, based on the intent that your body benefits from just getting to sleep as much as a couple of hours worth of shut-eye. He purportedly used a spoon to wake himself up just as he lost consciousness.
9. Caffeine Nap
Yes I had to read this one twice too; I always thought that alkaloid kept you awake. But according to an article if you have a cup of coffee the take a power kip you will wake up feeling refreshed and ready to go.
10. Lucid Dream
No its not a scene from the Minority Report, apparently you can teach yourself to lucid dream; whereby you can direct your dream in which ever direction you want due to knowing you are sleeping. No more will you wake up in a cold sweat from turning up at work naked!

Sleep is a basic human need and without it we simply wouldnt function properly just like if you use your laptop computer for too long, it will eventually power-down. Sleep acts as a way of recharging our batteries, but how much sleep we need to get every night is a debate that has raged for years, with numbers ranging from six hours to nine hours, and the answer is that every mortal is different.
Newborn children spend most of their primeval days sleeping, even though they dont exactly do much to make themselves tired! In the first couple of months of a babys life, dont be surprised to note that it is sleeping for as much as 18 hours every day, although this is likely to be broken up quite frequently. Between the first 3 and eleven months of your babys life, this sleeping pattern may become a bit more disturbed, and although they may sleep around 10-12 hours every night, they will also sleep a lot during the day for a couple of hours apiece time, effectively reaching the same amount of sleep as they had during their first couple of months after birth.
Toddlers (ages 1-3) will still require a lot of sleep because they will be slowly being introduced to the world, such as potty training and eating, and this can be very tiring on their small bodies. They can sleep for around 12-14 hours every night and still enjoy a couple of small naps during the day - it is all part of the phase-down process from being a baby to becoming a child, and getting them used to requiring less sleep as they age.
Between the ages of 3 and 12, your child will gradually require less sleep and should start into a pattern of having around 10 hours every night, and the naps during the day will become shorter and much less frequent, especially when they start school. Children can be very active, both in and out of school, and this takes its toll, meaning that when bedtime comes around, they should start asleep quite quickly - providing you can get them to go to their beds in the first place!
As your child enters their teen years, assessing the amount of sleep they require is quite difficult. This is the time when people decide what course of life they want to take, whether they are going to be active sportspeople or lazy couched-potatoes! This can have a huge bearing on how much sleep they need and actually get, because many teenagers dont fulfil their sleep potential. They like to stay up later and later even though they still have to get up for school or college in the morning and if their timetable allows it, they will happily take an extra hour in bed in the morning, which sends their sleep pattern out of sync for that night.
Adults need about 7-9 hours sleep, but how much they get also varies on how they live their life. A high-ranking professional may only get about 6 hours every night and may have adjusted their body to only require this much, meaning that they do not suffer. Different people prefer different sleeping positions, and there isnt one particular position that is best for everyone. However, some positions offer better comfort than others, and some are more appropriate if you are experiencing pain or aching in certain areas.

Lying in bed last night I began to think about…everything. Ironically the only time I seem to be healthy to hold thoughts in my head is when I should be dispersing them, throwing them into high wind over a barren sandy desert of sleep. It is such an unfortunate conundrum for someone who loves sleep, could sleep all through the day without a care in the world but as soon as head hits pillow it’s…think, think, think.
I am overcome with an urge to call long lost friends I haven’t spoken to in years, place the washing or clean the bathroom or read an article I had left open in that days newspaper. Why when I could do this all tomorrow? I conclude that I naturally must be a nocturnal human being. My best productive and most compassionate nature comes out after the sun goes in and no amount of coaxing will bring it out before.
There must be more people that feel like this, maybe they have already formed some kind of late night help group or chat line, someone you can call when everyone else is asleep and regurgitate your thoughts to or just chat about nothing.
Sometimes I can stop this happening if I swap beds. If I am sleeping somewhere different it almost stops my brain from working in the same way, I am too busy acclimatising to my new surroundings to think and no sooner have got used to the texture of the sheets and the feel of the different mattress than I have dropped off to sleep. Result.
If I ever do this at the weekend and sleep in, anyone that comes looking for me assumes that I must have gone out without telling anyone. No one ever thinks to look in the spare room to see if I am there. I live at home and the rest of my family always seem to get up primeval at the weekend however I do this all week and sometimes it’s nice to have a lie in, especially if I have been up half the night thinking. I lay smiling knowing that I am innocuous in bed for another hour or so.
I have been given some hope though. The other day I was sitting in my friend Dave’s house watching a film. It was a little cold so he brought over a big bright multi coloured quilt and threw it over me. The bright colours really cheered me up and it prefabricated me think that if I had a bed cover like that, I would go to sleep happy. It is now my new mission to find the perfect happy bed cover, one that it would just seem wrong to be depressing under or want to get out of.
This could be a crazy intent and there is no guarantee that it’s going to work but it’s my last hope. I can’t keep bed hopping every night and what happens when I move into my own flat? Ill only be healthy to afford a one bedroom on my meagre salary!
That night when I go to sleep…I think about where I am going to buy my quilt from and have to swap beds again to resist the urge of surfing the net to look for 60’s retro prints.
